Common Causes of Drywall Damage
Drywall is a lightweight and cost-effective option for creating walls and ceilings, but, like anything else, it is not immune to damage. Drywall damage can occur for a variety of reasons, ranging from minor cosmetic issues to more serious structural problems:
- Extensive home renovations such as tile removal
- Moving Furniture
- Doorknobs and doors opening too far
- Electrical, plumbing and HVAC repairs
- Nails
- House settling
Common Issues We Address
DSA Painting’s professional drywall repair and painting crews can repair a variety of drywall issues, no matter the cause. The most common issues we address in homes are cracked corners from homes settling, small holes from nail pops and screws, and larger, more extensive damage that could’ve been caused by water damage or some other cause.
Cracked Corners
Cracked corners in drywall are common due to uneven home settlement over time. These cracks can extend all the way up the wall. To address these, we monitor the movement of your home to make sure it has stopped and will assess the extent of the damage. Our crew will remove the original drywall compound, refill the gaps, and re-tape the drywall, ensuring a perfect corner fit by smoothly spreading the compound and creasing the tape down the middle.
Small Holes
Common drywall issues, such as small holes from nails, screws, hooks, or fasteners, require attention and often a new coat of paint. The first step is to drive the hardware back down and smooth raised edges without crushing the drywall core. A few coats of drywall compound are applied, then scraped and sanded to blend with the surrounding wall. We then prime and paint the area so that it matches the remaining section of the wall.
Large Damaged Areas
To address larger-scale drywall damage, DSA Painting always checks for obstructions such as wires, ducts or pipes prior to doing any repairs. After ensuring that there is nothing in the way, we carefully cut away the damaged section of drywall. In order for the new drywall patch to be secured, we install a backer board behind the existing drywall to allow a place for the new patch to to be attached. Like all other repairs, we finish it off with tape and spackle to ensure a seamless finish.
